There’s a real need for an intelligent but aggressive group in London. All the treasured groups are just so softcore. At one time there was a real upsurge of new young groups and incredible records like ‘She is Beyond Good and Evil’… you know, The Pop Group before they sacrificed the music for that soapbox, toilet-roll politics.

We used to rub Burt Bacharach albums on our crotches.
Billy MacKenzie, the lead singer of the brilliant, unjustly forgotten (for the most part) Scottish post-punk band The Associates. He sadly killed himself in ‘97.

Magazine - ‘Motorcade’

The Futureheads - ‘Decent Days and Nights’

I’m in an early-’00s post-punk revival mood at the moment. This particular song actually sounds more power-poppy than anything else, kind of like The Knack (minus the misogyny) or something.

The Raincoats! One of the stranger, yet most brilliant groups to emerge from the late ’70s British post-punk scene.

Ian Dury - Spasticus Autisticus

Wonderful groove. Wikipedia says:

His 1981 song “Spasticus Autisticus” - written by Dury to show his savage disdain for that year’s International Year of Disabled Persons, which he saw as patronising and counter-productive - was banned by the BBC despite having been written by a disabled person (Dury having been left crippled by childhood polio).

A brilliant single off an incredibly underwhelming album. Sly and Robbie provide the rhythm section.
